On 30 August, BICC invites to the talk “South Sudan at the Crossroads”. EJ Hogendoorn, deputy Africa Director of the International Crisis Group will discuss what options remain for the international community and what can be done to bring the conflict parties back to the negotiation table. South Sudan has been engulfed in a civil war since December 2013 when a faction of the ruling party SPLM under the leadership of then Vice President Riek Machar broke away from the government. Fighting between government forces and the rebels, as well as a resulting humanitarian crisis has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of South Sudanese and caused the displacement of millions of people. In 2015, the parties signed the Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan (ARCSS), but the agreement collapsed when renewed fighting drove Riek Machar and his followers back into the bush in mid-2016. One year later, the prospects for a revitalization of the peace agreement seem dim as the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate.
